CHARLEY IPSEN

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Charley is a non-binary, interdisciplinary artist working in Theatre, Music and Science Communication. They began training as an actor at the Oxford School of Drama before turning towards directing and performance design. In 2015 they joined Lightning Banjo and Lost & Found Theatre (CA). From 2016-2017 they were the artistic director of Culture Clash Theatre, leading a.o. the productions of The Threepenny Opera (2016) and Cinemusical (2017). Most recently, they directed the Anglo-Germanic production of The Good Person of Sezuan (2018) at Theatro Technis, London. Charley is resident designer for set and costume at the Almeida Theatre.

Charley's work has previously worked in the UK, Germany and Canada. In 2016, their LGBT+ play Tales from the Inside received the Audience Choice Award at Rainbow Reels Queer and Trans Film Festival. Their show At the Break of Dawn (co-written and directed with Leo Doulton) was nominated for the Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award at Edinburgh Fringe 2015.
